Yolanda Saldívar parole: Denied After 30 Years

Yolanda Saldívar parole

Yolanda Saldívar, who was convicted of killing Tejano music icon Selena Quintanilla-Pérez in 1995, has been denied parole, the Texas Board of Pardon and Paroles announced on Thursday. Saldívar, now 64, will continue serving her life sentence for the murder of the beloved singer.

Why Was Yolanda Saldívar Denied Parole?

The board stated that Saldívar still poses a threat to public safety and highlighted the severity of her crime. Additionally, the panel pointed to her “conscious disregard for the lives, safety, or property of others.”

Selena’s family and her widower, Chris Pérez, expressed relief over the decision, emphasizing the continued pursuit of justice for Selena’s memory.

“While nothing can bring Selena back, this decision reaffirms justice for the beautiful life we lost,” the family said.

How Did Selena Die and Who Was She?

Known as the “Queen of Tejano,” Selena was a growing talent in both mainstream and Latin music. Fans all throughout the world were enthralled by songs like “Como la Flor” and “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom,” among others.

Saldívar shot Selena in the back at a hotel in Corpus Christi on March 31, 1995. Saldívar, who managed Selena’s shops and led her fan club, lost her roles weeks earlier after facing misappropriation accusations. Saldívar said that he pulled the trigger during a confrontation and that it was a botched suicide attempt.

What made Yolanda kill Selena?

Saldívar said the shooting was an accident, but prosecutors accused her of committing a premeditated crime fueled by anger and betrayal. After a highly publicized trial, the court convicted Saldívar of first-degree murder and sentenced her to life in prison with parole eligibility after 30 years.

What Will Happen to Yolanda Saldívar Next?

In 2030, Saldívar will be eligible for a parole review while incarcerated in Gatesville, Texas. Courts have always maintained her conviction in spite of her appeals and allegations of abuse over the years.
