Millions of Americans are facing major travel disruptions this Christmas holiday due to severe weather conditions and technical issues at airports. As one of the busiest travel periods of the year gets underway, both winter storms and airline delays are causing havoc for holiday travelers.
Across the East Coast, the first major storm of the winter season hit cities from Boston to Baltimore, bringing ice and snow that significantly impacted travel plans. Meanwhile, on the West Coast, California residents are dealing with the aftermath of a storm that unleashed hurricane-force winds, heavy rainfall, and high surf, leading to flooding and property damage. Tragically, one person lost their life as a result of the storm’s fury.
In addition to these weather challenges, air travel has been further complicated by a technology issue at American Airlines. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a nationwide ground stop on Tuesday morning due to a “vendor technology issue,” grounding American Airlines flights across the country.
East Coast Weather Woes
For travelers along the East Coast, heavy snowfall in places like Boston and New York, as well as ice and sleet in Washington, D.C., are creating hazardous road and airport conditions. The storm is expected to continue affecting flights throughout the day, with icy conditions causing significant delays for both travelers and ground crews.
West Coast Struggles
California, too, is grappling with the aftermath of a powerful storm that caused dramatic coastal damage. A pier collapsed and threw three people into the Pacific Ocean, and towering 60-foot waves caused flooding and evacuation orders. Though the storm has passed, high surf warnings and flooding alerts remain in effect.
Airport Delays Due to Technical Glitches
As if the weather weren’t enough, travelers have also been dealing with significant disruptions due to technical issues at American Airlines. The FAA’s ground stop, which lasted about an hour, caused cascading delays at airports across the country. Many flights were delayed by up to two hours, with American Airlines working tirelessly to resolve the situation.
“We’re doing everything we can to get our customers to their destinations as quickly as possible,” American Airlines said in a statement. While most flights were delayed in the morning, airlines are hopeful that afternoon flights will operate on time.
With so many Americans trying to get home or to holiday destinations, the combination of severe weather and technology malfunctions has led to a stressful travel experience for millions. Travelers are urged to check flight statuses and weather alerts regularly, as conditions may change quickly in the coming days.
