A new anchor was announced for “Nightly News” on Wednesday. Tom Llamas will replace Lester Holt this summer. He will also take on the role of managing editor. Tom Llamas’ Nightly News Era begins after Holt’s decade-long run.
Llamas served as a senior correspondent at News. He anchored “Top Story with Tom Llamas” on News NOW. Janelle Rodriguez confirmed he would continue in that role. “Tom brings excellence and integrity,” she said in a statement.
Llamas called this anchor change a profound honor. “It carries great responsibility,” he noted. He looked forward to collaborating with the “Nightly News” team. Llamas made history as the first Latino journalist in the weeknight slot.
Llamas praised Lester Holt as a trusted broadcaster. Holt announced his step-down last month after 10 years but kept “Dateline” as his full-time gig. He pledged support to Llamas for the transition.
Llamas’ Journey
Llamas started an internship at Telemundo. He joined the news team as a production assistant and took local roles at WTVJ and WNBC. ABC’s chief correspondent was his next step before returning in 2021.
Llamas covered major events for News NOW. He extensively reported on the Israel-Hamas war and landed interviews with Trump, Zelenskyy, and Maduro. Tom Llamas’ Nightly News Era builds on this experience.
“Great staff comes with the job,” Holt told Llamas on Wednesday. He encouraged Llamas to put his personal stamp on the broadcast and expressed excitement for Llamas’ family milestone.
