First Movie Star to Join the Hit Stage Show
Tom Felton Harry Potter fans rejoice: the actor who played Draco Malfoy is returning to the role in a Broadway production. He will join the Broadway cast of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child at the Lyric Theatre in New York. His limited 19-week engagement begins on November 11.
A Full-Circle Moment
Felton, now 37, called the experience a “full-circle moment,” as he will be the same age Draco is in the play. “Being part of the Harry Potter films has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” Felton said. “Joining this production allows me to bring Draco’s story to a new generation of fans.”
Breaking New Ground
This marks the first time a star from the original movie franchise has appeared in the stage adaptation. The play acts as a sequel set 19 years after the original story. It features Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Draco as parents sending their own children to Hogwarts.
A Broadway Milestone
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is the highest-grossing non-musical play in Broadway history, with over 10 million tickets sold worldwide. Felton’s casting is expected to bring even more fans to the Lyric Theatre.
Producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender described Felton’s return as “a cultural moment charged with nostalgia, evolution, and emotion.”
Instagram Tease Sends Fans Into Frenzy
Felton teased his return on Instagram, donning Draco’s signature blonde hair and robes before dramatically asking, “Scared, Potter?” The caption simply read, “Draco is back.”
Felton’s Post-Potter Path
Since leaving the wizarding world, Felton has starred in Rise of the Planet of the Apes. He also made his West End debut in 2:22 A Ghost Story and appeared in the HBO Harry Potter 20th Anniversary special. He also authored the memoir Beyond the Wand in 2022.
