Sally Ride’s Secret Love Story Revealed in New Documentary
Sally Ride life partner: Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, is also remembered for her private 27-year relationship with Tam O’Shaughnessy, revealed shortly before her death. But a new Nat Geo documentary, Sally, reveals a deeply personal and long-hidden part of her life — her 27-year romance with life partner Tam O’Shaughnessy.
The film, which premieres June 16 on National Geographic and begins streaming June 17 on Disney+, showcases Ride’s incredible space career and her intimate, private love story.
A 27-Year Bond That Began in Childhood
Ride and O’Shaughnessy first met as young girls.Although they kept it a secret for decades, their connection from infancy developed into a sexual partnership in 1985.
In moving and frank interviews, O’Shaughnessy, who narrates a large portion of the documentary, discusses her experiences. Until Ride’s death from pancreatic cancer in 2012, their bond remained strong.
Sally’s Last Request: “You Decide”
Ten days before Ride died, O’Shaughnessy asked how she should present herself publicly at Ride’s upcoming memorials.
“She told me, you decide what you want to say, how open you want to be about our relationship,” said O’Shaughnessy.
That moment of permission led to a new chapter in Ride’s legacy — one that honors her as both a national hero and a deeply loving partner.
How the Documentary Brings Their Love to Life
Directed by Cristina Costantini, Sally premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival and features recreations inspired by Tam’s memories, due to the couple’s few public photos.
“Sally is so closed off in her communication that Tam was the closest and most intimate voice that we could get to Sally,” said producer Lauren Cioffi.
O’Shaughnessy’s vulnerability and humor bring Sally’s story to life in a way that feels both intimate and powerful.
A Tradition Celebrated
The Presidential Medal of Freedom was given to O’Shaughnessy at the White House in 2013 after President Barack Obama posthumously gave it to Sally Ride. This award recognized Ride’s pioneering work in space exploration and her lasting impact on education, science, and LGBTQ+ visibility.
Why Their Story Matters
O’Shaughnessy hopes their story will help people better understand Ride as a complete person.
“We had a wonderful relationship from the time we were kids until we became lovers,” she said. “I think it’s something to be proud of.”
Their relationship stands as a testament to love, loyalty, and quiet courage, lived even in the shadows.
