As the holiday season approaches, the RSPCA is raising concerns about the growing number of neglected pets in Devon and Cornwall. The charity has reported a 19% rise in neglect cases in Devon and a 14% increase in Cornwall between January and September 2024 compared to the previous year.
The increase in neglect cases is believed to be linked to the surge in pet ownership during the COVID-19 pandemic, compounded by financial strain that many pet owners are facing. Jo Hirst, RSPCA Superintendent, highlighted that the financial pressures of Christmas—such as buying presents, extra food, and paying higher energy bills—may worsen the crisis.
In 2023, the RSPCA received 20,999 reports of animal abandonment on their national emergency line, a 30% increase from the 16,118 reports in 2020. In Cornwall, neglect cases grew from 494 in 2023 to 562 in 2024. Similarly, in Devon, the number of neglect cases rose from 875 in 2023 to 1,038 in 2024.
These alarming statistics were shared as part of the RSPCA’s Join the Christmas Rescue campaign, which calls for donations to help support animals in need during the festive season.
Hirst added, “To help more neglected animals, we must work together. We’re urging everyone who believes no animal should suffer this Christmas to donate to our appeal.”
