An animal shelter in Stratham, New Hampshire, is currently overwhelmed after rescuing over 600 pet mice from a home in the Seacoast area. The New Hampshire Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NHSPCA) was called in after the homeowner struggled to manage the growing number of mice in their possession.
The Origins of the 600 Mice
“We’re dealing with over 600 mice from one home, and we expect even more to come in the next week,” said Lisa Dennison, Executive Director of NHSPCA. The homeowner had surrendered three large, overcrowded containers filled with dozens of mice, many of which were pregnant.
“We believe the situation got out of control due to unregulated breeding,” Dennison explained. “When you have that many animals in one place, it’s clear that breeding has spiraled beyond what the owner could manage.” She added that the shelter is always ready to offer help to those in need.
Rescued Mice in Varied Conditions
The rescued mice were found in varying conditions. “Some are healthy, well-tempered, and will make great pets,” Dennison said. “However, others have suffered injuries due to overcrowding and fighting, which makes the situation more challenging.”
The mice, commonly referred to as “fancy mice,” are domestic mice that come in a variety of colors. Despite the difficult circumstances, many of the mice are now available for adoption.
Mice Available for Adoption
The NHSPCA has begun the process of putting these fancy mice up for adoption. The Dean family from Raymond, New Hampshire, expressed interest in adopting some of the mice. “We’re excited that these mice will find new homes,” said Avery Dean. “Hopefully, it will help make mice a more popular pet.”
Dennison, who has worked at the NHSPCA for over 30 years, mentioned that she has never encountered a situation involving this many mice. “It’s definitely a first for us, though we’ve heard of similar situations at other shelters,” Dennison chuckled. “But now, it’s our turn.”
Adoption Fees Waived for Mice and Rats
To help these mice find loving homes, the NHSPCA is waiving adoption fees from Friday, December 13 through Sunday, December 15. Additionally, starter kits, which include a tank, bedding, and other essentials, will be provided to adopters.
