Myanmar EarthQuake Aftershocks Worsen Crisis

Myanmar earthquake aftershocks

Myanmar earthquake aftershocks have worsened the devastation, leaving over 1,600 people dead from Friday’s 7.7-magnitude quake. Strong aftershocks have shook the area as survivors scramble for cover, making rescue operations much more difficult. Unfortunately, as the military junta continues to launch airstrikes on regions controlled by rebels, the country’s prolonged civil conflict has only made the misery worse.

Effects of the Earthquake and the Increasing Death Toll

Cities like Mandalay are in ruins due to the aftershocks of the Myanmar earthquake. Hospitals are overcrowded, buildings have crumbled, and roads have buckled. According to the UN, damage to the infrastructure has caused humanitarian activities to be severely delayed, which has limited access to potentially life-saving supplies.Food and water are two of the most pressing necessities.

  • Emergency shelters
  • Medical supplies
  • Sanitation and hygiene kits

Due to a shortage of medical supplies in hospitals, civilians are relying on international help teams from countries such as China, India, Singapore, Thailand, and Russia. However, aid is still scarce.

Military Strikes Amid Disaster

Despite the devastation, Myanmar’s military regime continues its airstrikes against rebel forces. Reports from the BBC Burmese Service confirmed that seven civilians were killed in an airstrike in Naungcho just hours after the earthquake.

The National Unity Government (NUG) announced a two-week halt to offensive activities, but the military has not followed through. The delivery of humanitarian supplies has been made more difficult by the continuous conflicts.

Global Calls for Ceasefire and Aid Access

Tom Andrews and the U.N.The Special Rapporteur on Myanmar has called for unrestricted humanitarian access and an urgent ceasefire. Additionally, the government is under pressure from international groups to cease impeding aid operations.

What Happens Next?

People in Myanmar are bracing for further earthquakes as the death toll is expected to rise. As search and rescue workers continue their work, time is of the importance. The support of the international community will be essential in the coming days.
