Singer Michael Bolton, 72, is opening up about his difficult battle with glioblastoma, the most aggressive form of brain cancer.

Michael Bolton brain cancer: After undergoing emergency surgery to remove a brain tumor in December 2023, Michael Bolton disclosed in a heartfelt interview with People that he had been diagnosed with glioblastoma. Due to complications, a second operation was carried out in January 2024. He has since had radiation therapy and chemotherapy to manage his condition.

What Is Glioblastoma?

Glioblastoma is the most common type of malignant brain tumor in adults. While the cancer rarely spreads outside the brain and spinal cord, it is known for its rapid growth and resistance to treatment. According to the Cleveland Clinic, more than 13,000 Americans are diagnosed each year.

There is currently no cure for the disease. Treatment focuses on slowing tumor growth and easing symptoms.

Impact on Health and Career

Following his diagnosis, Bolton took a break from touring. Since completing radiation and chemotherapy in October 2024, he now undergoes an MRI every two months to monitor for recurrence. The illness has impacted his short-term memory, mobility, and speech.

Still, the legendary singer remains resilient. He works with a personal trainer and voice therapist and finds strength in support from his family.

“You’re reaching into your resources and your resolve in a way that you never would have thought,” Bolton shared.

A New Perspective on Life

Bolton said he avoids asking doctors for a prognosis and instead focuses on staying positive and living fully. “I think we develop capabilities and problem management, and we learn how to make the best out of a bad situation,” he said.

His daughter, Taryn Bolton, emphasized their shared commitment: “We’re in this together, and that’s it.”

For Bolton, enriching his relationships and leaving a meaningful legacy have become top priorities.

“It’s unthinkable for it to be okay not to make the most of your life,” he said.
