On the April 16 episode of The Masked Singer Season 13, the mystery behind Paparazzo was finally revealed. The star under the mask turned out to be none other than Matthew Lawrence, best known for his role on Boy Meets World.
Lawrence, 45, spoke exclusively to PEOPLE about his time on the show, including why he had to seek permission from his girlfriend, Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas, and her TLC bandmate, Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins, to sing their hit song “Unpretty.”
A Guilty Pleasure Song with a Twist
Before Lawrence could belt out the iconic 1999 hit, he needed Chilli’s approval and a thumbs-up from T-Boz, who co-wrote the track. “I had to ask them for permission because Tionne wrote that song,” Lawrence shared. “It was such a full-circle moment.”
As for the selection of “Unpretty” itself, Lawrence admits it was a guilty pleasure of his from the past. “When ‘Unpretty’ came out, it became one of those songs I loved to sing in the shower,” Lawrence said. “I jokingly listed it as a potential song on The Masked Singer, and of course, they picked it.”
A Moment of Personal Growth
Despite his initial reluctance, Lawrence decided to take a leap of faith and join The Masked Singer, thanks to his newfound approach to life. “I’m in a point in my life now where I’m not allowing fear to dictate things,” he explained. This fearless attitude allowed him to overcome his fear of singing in public, something he’s struggled with since an experience at a Broadway audition.
Lawrence’s journey on the show wasn’t just about singing but also about facing his personal fears head-on. “I’m definitely open to receiving more opportunities to sing,” he added.
Behind the Scenes with Chilli’s Support
Chilli, Lawrence’s girlfriend of three years, was his biggest supporter throughout the entire process. “She was so amazing, so supportive,” Lawrence said, adding that Chilli even offered him tips on how to sing the song.
Though Lawrence had always been hesitant about singing in public, his experience on The Masked Singer sparked a newfound passion for performance. Could more singing opportunities be on the horizon for the actor? Lawrence is now open to the possibility.
