Social Media Reacts: ‘Unrecognizable’ and ‘Alarming’
Griffin’s natural appearance has reignited debates over body shaming and mental health. While some defended her choice to appear without makeup, others used it to mock her amid a larger controversy involving Donald Trump.
“New photos of Kathy Griffin are terrifying kids,” one user posted on X.
Another added, “She looks nothing like she did a few years ago.”
Controversy Still Lingers from Trump Video
Griffin remains entangled in backlash from a recent anti-billionaire video she shared on TikTok.Reminiscent to her controversial 2017 photo carrying a fake Trump head—a move that had a significant negative impact on both her personal and professional lives—the tape included manipulated images of severed heads that resembled Trump and other billionaires.
Health Issues: PTSD, Cancer, and Other Conditions
Griffin’s severe health issues must also be taken into consideration while interpreting her appearance:
- After receiving a stage 1 lung cancer diagnosis in 2021, half of her left lung was removed.
- In April 2025, she underwent a hysterectomy to treat a precancerous condition.
- In 2023, she was diagnosed with complex PTSD, which she attributed to the years of fallout after the Trump photo.
On TikTok, she has been open about symptoms like vomiting, anxiety, and even past pill addiction and suicidal thoughts in 2020.
Past Acts of Solidarity and Vulnerability
In 2017, Griffin shaved her head in support of her sister, Joyce, who was undergoing chemotherapy. This gesture gained wide admiration but was quickly overshadowed by the Trump image backlash that same year.
Despite the trauma, Griffin has continued to use her platform to speak about mental health, body image, and political freedom.
