Revitalization Plans Move Forward in Uttoxeter
A Staffordshire shopping center is set to be acquired by the local council after a previous sale agreement fell through earlier this year.
East Staffordshire Borough Council has decided to use compulsory purchase powers to acquire The Maltings shopping center in Uttoxeter, aiming to redevelop the site for future use.
Plans for Redevelopment
The council intends to submit a planning application in early 2025 following community consultations about the site’s future. In the coming weeks, architects and planning consultants will be appointed to finalize the design.
The original owner, M J Barrett Group, pulled out of a planned sale in September, just two weeks before the deal was set to close. The company instead opted for an alternative buyer, who proposed refurbishing the retail center rather than redeveloping it.
Council’s Commitment to Revitalization
Despite the setback, East Staffordshire Borough Council remains fully committed to revamping The Maltings and has allocated over £1 million ($1.3 million) for the project. However, a recent report cautions that budget constraints could mean redevelopment might need to be carried out in phases, depending on the final costs of the compulsory purchase.
