Carlo Acutis sainthood marks a historic moment

Carlo Acutis sainthood

Carlo Acutis sainthood marks a historic moment as the Catholic Church prepares to canonize its first millennial saint—a British-born Italian teen known for spreading faith through technology. Carlo Acutis died of leukemia at just 15 in 2006. The Church now celebrates him alongside saints like Mother Teresa and St. Francis of Assisi. Acutis used his love of technology to promote Catholicism. He developed websites focused on the Eucharist and its related miracles.

How Carlo Acutis Became a Saint

Acutis, who was born in 1991, was a pioneer in the digital age, developing websites to disseminate Catholic teaching. Because of his efforts to use modern technology for religious instruction, he has come to represent the intersection of religion and innovation. After his untimely death, the Church initiated the process for his sainthood. This process typically begins five years after a person’s death.

The process includes the title of “Servant of God,” followed by “Venerable” if the person demonstrates “heroic virtues.” The Church named Acutis “Venerable” after investigating his life. In 2020, they beatified him after attributing a miracle to his intercession.

The Miracle of Carlo Acutis

For beatification to proceed, a miracle is required. Acutis’ case involved two miracles. One miracle involved the healing of a 4-year-old Brazilian boy with a pancreatic malformation. The other was the recovery of a Costa Rican woman severely injured in a bicycle accident. Both miracles followed prayers from their parents asking for Acutis’ help.

Acutis himself had great faith in miracles. Just before his death, he completed a website tracking Catholic miracles around the world. This devotion led to his canonization, making him the first millennial saint of the Catholic Church.

What’s Up Next for Carlo Acutis?

On April 27, 2025, the Church will canonize Acutis in a historic ceremony at St. Peter’s Square, drawing tens of thousands of spectators. During the canonization mass, the Church will formally recognize his good actions and the miracles attributed to him. They will declare him a saint.
