Cain Velasquez sentenced to five years in prison for the 2022 Santa Clara County shooting. The former UFC heavyweight champion faced multiple charges. Velasquez, 42, entered a no contest plea to charges of criminal assault and attempted murder in what the prosecution characterized as a vigilante shooting rampage.
Overview of the Incident
Cain Velasquez sentenced after chasing a car carrying Harry Goularte, accused of assaulting his 4-year-old son, in February 2022. Velasquez shot the car several times during the 11-mile pursuit. Goularte was not hurt, but his stepfather was shot while he was driving it.
The shooting took place shortly after Goularte had been released from custody without bail. Goularte was on his way to receive an electronic monitoring bracelet when the attack occurred.
Legal Outcome
Velasquez was sentenced in Santa Clara County and received credit for time served. His defense attorney, Renee Hessling, described the result as “bittersweet” and praised Velasquez for taking responsibility for his actions.
“Throughout it all, Cain has shown courage and strength of character,” Hessling said. “The sentence handed down today reflects the complexities of the situation.”
Velasquez’s Statement
On a recent podcast, Velasquez expressed remorse for his actions, acknowledging the danger he posed to innocent people.
“We cannot put the law in our own hands,” Velasquez said. “I understand what I did and I’m willing to do everything I have to, to pay that back.”
In addition to the criminal charges, Velasquez has also filed a civil lawsuit against Goularte and his family’s daycare, alleging negligence and sexual battery.
Community Reaction
District Attorney Jeff Rosen condemned the shooting, calling it a reckless act that endangered the community.
“If you want to do justice in Santa Clara County, please apply for a badge,” Rosen stated.
